HGV Medical Assessment with Our GPs

Our GPs offer a comprehensive HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Medical Assessment to ensure that drivers meet the necessary health requirements to safely operate large commercial vehicles. This medical check is a requirement for all HGV drivers and must be completed periodically, typically every 5 years until the age of 45, then more frequently as drivers age.

What to Expect During the Assessment:

Medical History Review

The GP will discuss your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions, medications, or surgeries that might affect your ability to drive safely. It is essential to disclose any relevant health information, such as heart conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, or sleep disorders.

Physical Examination

The GP will conduct a physical exam, which includes checking vital signs like blood pressure, heart rate, and vision. They will also assess your general fitness and mobility to ensure you can handle the physical demands of driving.

Vision Test

A key part of the assessment involves testing your eyesight. You must meet specific vision standards, including having a minimum visual acuity of 6/12 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. A vision test should be carried out by an optician prior to your medical appointment.

Urine Sample

A urine test may be requested to check for conditions such as diabetes or kidney issues.

Proof of Identity

A valid ID (such as a passport or driving license) is needed.

Driving License Details

Your current driving license, including any medical restrictions or endorsements.

Medical History

A detailed list of any medical conditions you have been diagnosed with, along with the names and dosages of any medications you are taking.

Recent Test Results

If applicable, bring any recent test results, such as blood pressure readings, blood sugar levels, or vision tests.

Current GP Details

If you are under the care of a specialist or have any ongoing treatments, it is helpful to bring contact information for your healthcare providers.
